We’ll take Manhattan…….

We took the subway into Manhattan, bought some lovely food and went to Central Park for a picnic. Big city!

It was a beautiful sunny day, and Central Park was full of people running, walking their dogs and enjoying the weather. The park Is over 800 acres, and we spent hours walking. The leaves are just beginning to turn… in a few more weeks the park will be full of colour.

New Yorkers must thank their lucky stars for Central Park!

Something different with Angela.

Angela is visiting me, so today we did some natural dyeing with eucalyptus leaves. (She had emailed me before arrival suggesting we do some dying together, and I replied that though I appreciated the offer, I would prefer to leave it for a few years yet.)
We had some simple white silk kimono style jackets.
Having brewed up a dye solution using fallen eucalyptus leaves overnight, we added red onion skins and those wonderful gum leaves that make an orange dye and wrapped our silk jackets tightly, binding them with string. Although we should have left them overnight in the dyeing liquor, we were too impatient! Here are some of our results.

In Situ, Mosman – shop till you drop.

in situ 13 Mosman Festival of Sculpture & Installation

5 October – 20 October

Starting at Mosman Art Gallery, the exhibition runs up to Mosman Square and along Military Road, from Spit Junction to Mosman Junction, Sydney

Window shopping takes on a new meaning as 46 artists from In Situ take over the Mosman shopping precinct with their sculptures and installations.

For 14 days, visitors can discover the clever, ingenious and creative artworks installed in the public spaces along Military Road from Mosman to Spit Junction.

Whimsical, challenging and fun – these installations and sculptures transform the nature of shopping into a thought provoking experience. In Situ 2013 will feature both traditional sculptural works and contemporary installations or 3D works that respond to place, The Festival provides a unique opportunity to link the best sculptural practices of the past with contemporary artistic approaches to interpreting and enhancing public spaces.

This exhibition is a major event for the 2013 Festival of Mosman. The exhibition will be opened at the Mosman Art Gallery on 4 October at 6.30pm.

In Situ 2013 coincides with the 100th anniversary of the first entry of the Royal Australian Navy’s Fleet into Sydney.

In Situ, Mosman

My little houses have been selected for In Situ, Mosman.  They are destined to be displayed in the window of Vernon Partners, 836 Military Road, which is quite appropriate, since Vernon Partners is a property agent.

However, you don’t need a mortgage to buy one of my houses!  The exhibition will be open from the 5th of October till the 20th October.

Spring in the Mountains

Spring has sprung in the Blue Mountains……and the nights are lit with starlight.
On my walks, I collected rocks to grind into ochre to die my paper for Shifu.

And here are the dyed papers…….

My first attempt at Shifu

Here’s my first attempt at Shifu. Shifu is a Japanese technique for making thread or twine out of paper. The thread is surprisingly strong. At one time Japanese people used to make clothes out of this paper thread, and they would survive laundering and the normal wear and tear that clothes go through.

This Shifu is dyed with soil that I collected in Broome, Western Australia. The colour is beautiful.

The second and third photographs are of some paper prepared for Shifu, also died with Broome red soil. I thought the form was rather beautiful, so I waxed it instead. There are lovely shadows cast by the cut paper.
